About me

When I was nine, my dad handed me a GE tape recorder that included the tiniest of 80’s microphones, and it seems I never really put it down. I recorded everything: dogs, clocks, blenders, birds, my dad snoring, favorite shows off the TV, anything worth saving for later.

Furthering my obsession with sound gathering, my dad treated car rides as listening sessions; there was classic rock, sometimes jazz, always some Buddy Holly and sound rich, vintage, radio shows. I was learning how to really listen to humor and sound effects and stories, letting my imagination paint the picture. Those driveway moments, where you sit in the parked car because the story isn't over yet, shaped how I hear everything, and now, how I shape sound. So did coming into the world with ears that don't miss much. The tape recorder made sense of this for me, a way to catch it all, hold it, understand it.

What I understand now is that sound lives in us. Even more amazing is that the three smallest bones in the human body are all in the ear. Sound is physical for everyone, those with hearing, for those with limited hearing and those without hearing. Sound lives in the body before the brain has time to catch up. A bird staking its territory, the pop of a cork signaling joy ahead, a sound effect dropping you into a memory you forgot you had, music crossing every language- these sounds live in us. I cannot stop myself from noticing it all, collecting it, sharing it.

Equipped with an MFA in creative writing and ears that don’t have a mute button, I find wonder in every new project. Whether I'm fulfilling an author's vision in an audiobook, script writing & meticulously editing/mixing a client’s podcast, coaching a storyteller, gathering sound effects for my library, or designing sound for a play, my level of curiosity is the same as it was at nine. I'm still asking: Wait, did you hear that?
